Poland's top mine has unveiled a significant strategy. "It's a real commitment."

“The main goal of the ESG strategy: to transform LW Bogdanka into a modern industrial entity, combining efficient production of thermal coal with innovative activities for sustainable development, social responsibility and environmental protection, in order to ensure long-term value for stakeholders and the region,” the company said in a press release.

"It demonstrates that Bogdanka wants not only to survive the transformation period, but to actively contribute to it. Responsibility and unwavering commitment to maintaining a high level of safety for people and the environment, as well as well-thought-out investments that ensure the preservation of jobs in the region. We are implementing a coordinated policy of improving mining and non-mining skills, aligned with mining and transformation plans," adds Stopa.

"ESG goals support the development of entrepreneurship in the Lublin region and the creation of jobs in low-emission sectors, which is a direct result of our business strategy. We will design and implement solutions that ensure responsibility in new areas of LW Bogdanka's development," he emphasizes.
The new ESG strategy encompasses eight programs outlined in 26 operational initiatives , the implementation of which is linked to the business strategy and non-financial reporting requirements. These programs include:
- minimizing the environmental and social impact of infrastructure,
- reducing the negative impact on the climate and the environment by increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the mine's operations,
- reducing the consumption of resources by implementing modern solutions for their management and processing,
- acquiring and retaining the best employees,
- launching new tools and resources to increase innovation and optimize processes, reduce the number of failures and improve employee qualifications in the use of modern technologies, as well as minimize risks associated with their use,
- strengthening the safety culture and the sense of shared responsibility for one’s own and one’s colleagues’ work safety,
- support for health initiatives, including mental, physical, emotional and economic health in the workplace and beyond,
- building a responsible value chain based on specific ESG criteria.
As part of the climate-efficient program, Bogdanka plans to build a 27 MW photovoltaic farm by 2030, and as part of the resource utilization program, maintain a minimum 40% recovery rate for mining waste.

Each project implemented as part of the strategy must meet at least 3 of the 8 cross-cutting CSR criteria, such as: impact on improving work safety, stakeholder education, employee volunteering, or cooperation with partner schools.
Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka supplies coal primarily to industrial customers located in eastern and northeastern Poland. The main markets for Bogdanka's commercial coal are the commercial and industrial power sectors. The Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka Group employs nearly six thousand people. Bogdanka is the largest employer in the Lublin region.
